Holding Patterns

A bizarre miscommunication was brought to my attention last Wednesday. Despite the fact that emails had been exchanged regarding my last day of work at my current assignment, apparently my direct report and I didn’t actually have a clear and mutual understanding of the end of my contract. As a result, I’m finding my self on this job with no real end in sight. Continue reading

Giving Notice

My three-day weekend was nothing short of draining. I spent the majority of the Memorial Day holiday weekend tethered to my computer, hunting for a privately sold used car for Mary. I’d forgotten how taxing the process is. One car looked like the car until we noticed a grunting sound as the automatic transmission shifted from fist gear to second. My brother-in-law, Bret, explained that that sounded like the clutch pack was going out, and that was the end of that conversation. Another prospect seemed doable until the seller finally shared that he didn’t have a title for the car. Anyway, knowing that we still have a few weeks left before school starts, I successfully resisted the growing urge to settle for any of the cars we looked at over the weekend.

Starting at BECU

There are far too many complications with the job over at Shawk for me to accurately convey in this brief posting, so I won’t be going into all that. I’ll just say that the job went sharply sideways, and that I need more than four billable hours of work in a week. (That just goes with the glamorous life of a freelancer.)

The More Things Change

After playing a bit of phone tag, I finally got in touch with Jeff from that one company I liked so much this morning. It’s been about six weeks since I last worked with them, and I’ve been trying to balance my eagerness to add their samples to my portfolio with an appropriate level of respect for their space. Needless to say, I was both relieved and grateful to find yesterday’s message from Jeff waiting on my cell phone this morning.

Extended Vacation

Checking my cell this morning, I found a message from Jeff. He apologized about the lateness of his return call. Yesterday was his first day back in the office since Spain, and things were hectic.

Crispy

,as in “burnt out.” For too many reasons, today looked like one of those days at work. Simple tasks inflated into larger chores. Everything felt disjointed. It wouldn’t have been quite so bad, but I kept making small, stupid mistakes, and Jeff (my boss) was right there to see them. Nothing like feeling inept; like a true bonehead. Oh, well. It happens.

I Can’t Talk About It

At about thirty minutes into my day, Jeff pulled me into his office and closed his door, asking me to sit down so we could talk. I think we talked for about thirty more minutes.

About Yesterday

After this morning’s shower and study, I wrote up a good list of “Things To Do Today.” I’ve really been letting things slide for a while now, since the hospital, actually. I’ve been looking for something to help snap me out of the hypnosis.

Back At Publicis…Again

Walking in to Publicis again today felt a bit odd. After the obligatory “Welcome back,” Juliette introduced herself. (This is the same Juliette whose office I occupied the last time I was on assignment at Publicis. It was nice to finally put a face to the gleanings gathered from reading her walls.)

Stopped Short

After a number of phone calls and spending most of the day in the dark, I learned that my assignment with Horton, Lantz and Low is now completed. I learned this from Jason while visiting their agency. My agent had said that they did not need me for this week, and that they understood that I needed to look for work, as opposed to just being on call until next week. I stopped by HL2 to pick up a few items I’d left and to get a sign-off on my time sheet. It was then that I learned that HL2′s client had OK’d their presentation and “signed off” on the project. With no mention of future work, Jason thanked me and endorsed my time sheet, indicating that I would no longer be needed.
