Inspired by a familiar impulse, I arrived on campus early last week bearing a clear agenda. Within the hour I found myself at the office of Professor D. Michael Larson, teacher of Art and Technology at Shoreline Community College.
I noted the Adobe InDesign manual on his desk as I introduced myself, and I explained my desire to learn silkscreening. Generously, he offered to teach me the basics of silkscreening and then providing me with the name of a textbook that served a class that is no longer taught (“Silkscreen Techniques,” by Biegeleisen and Cohn). Professor Larson further offered materials that he apparently has left over from some previous class or projects!
This is a fantastic opportunity! I’ve been packing the small book around in my backpack since checking it out of the school library that day, but I’ve only had enough time to skim through it until today. I’m a bit confused about some of the techniques discussed, but I’m also intrigued with some applications I’d not considered. The college may consider silkscreening to be a bit off a lost art, but I have no doubt I could put these skills to good use.
