Only four days until Fall Quarter

Including today, I now have only four days left until school starts, and I couldn’t be more excited! A wonderful unfoldment led to a dramatic shift in thought late Monday afternoon, and that culminated in my returning to Shoreline Community College this quarter as a fulltime student! Now only that, but additional unfoldments have presented themselves, and it looks like I may very well be holding full-time student status for quite some time! I really can’t tell you how grateful I am that this is happening, or just how unexpected this was.

The significance of this latest change in my life has also meant a dramatic shift in my week–the last week before Fall Quarter starts up. I’ve pushed as many of my other obligations to the side as possible for the time being so I can retool my life for study. My devotion to my activism is taking a back seat for the moment. My job prospects will be affected the most by my return to school, as my new schedule has me at the college daily. My social life, well, since I don’t have much of a social life it really hasn’t been affected.
Oh.. I should probably tell you about the classes I’m taking. Well, I’ve tried to really listen to wisdom on this issue. The choices I’ve made are based on consideration of schedule (photography taking priority again this quarter) and the potential to affect my current priorities. As much as I can be, I am comfortable my choices.
I’m enrolled for Intermediate Black & White Photography, which is the follow-up to last spring’s Beginning class. This gets me back in the dark room and behind the lens of a camera.

ART 102

Intermediate Black and White Photography

Course emphasizes gaining creative control through techniques such as the zone system, print toning, handcoloring, solarization and electronic imaging using Photoshop. Medium format camera introduced. Print quality stressed. Assignments are technical and visual in nature. Some cameras available for check-out. Students purchase film and supplies. Prerequisite: Art 100. Student option grading.

Second, I’ve enrolled in Speech Communication, which addresses both speaking and listening communication skills. (Yeah, I know. Done now?) I know that I have a bit of experience when it come to performing in front of an audience, but I also know that my listening and public speaking skills need all of the help they can get. I’m going to try to get over myself and do what I can to address this.

SPCMU 101

Basic Speech Communication

Students discover verbal, nonverbal and listening skills essential to effective everyday living. Students become competent communicators by applying interpersonal, small group, public speaking, and cross-cultural communication theories to a variety of contexts including their workplace, communities, and families. Prerequisites: Successful completion of ESL 100/English 100 or higher. Student option grading.

Finally, I’ve signed up for Entrepreneurship. I’ve already got a business license for my graphic design and desktop publishing services, and I’m sure my activism efforts would benefit significantly from this study. I’m truly fascinated by small business, but have never formally studied it. Throw in a healthy respect for the state of the economy and all of the unemployed graphic designers out the with B.A.s that are slinging coffee for a living and you’ll understand why this one’s a natural.
