I started the main task of my day by reporting to Seattle Municipal Court. I was somewhat surprised to learn that my jury duty wasn’t going to be held in the building I had originally thought. Even more surprising were the rather comfortable accommodations, which included air conditioning, internet access, and a terrace with an amazing view of downtown Seattle. (I’m thinking about bringing trying to bring Mary’s digital camera with me tomorrow so I can share the amazing view the juror’s area provides.)
On the down side, I have now learned that my jury obligation will be longer than I’d thought. It turns out that we are committed through Friday of this week, which means that I will need to reschedule and rethink my plans for this week. All things considered, this is only a minor inconvenience.
Since the good court has seen fit to rejoin me to my digital life, I find myself in a great position get attend to some personal tasks… as long as I don’t actually get selected to serve on a jury. (Fat chance.) There are only four terminal available to us, but I’m quite content to access the internet as long as any of the stations are free. I have been able to enter much of today’s entry from the juror’s holding tank, I’ll am even able to pursue my routine, online biblical study. (How perfect is that?) Unfortunately, there is a filter enabled on the computers which forbids access to certain sites, so I can’t watch porn, download MP3′s and bootlegged software, look at my personal homepage, or even see read all of the bible (the word “Sodom” raised problems in my brief usage).
This is my second time called to jury duty. I came a little bettter prepared to turn this awkward pause in my schedule into an opportunity. My bag is packed with a note pad, pens and pencils, a few design magazines, a few books on desktop publishing, graphic design and business books, as well as cards, a cribbage board and a travel chess set. It seems obvious that this is a good time to get nice and quiet.
