In an effort to strengthen the foundation of our forays into web publishing, Mary and I began going through SAMS Teach Yourself HTML 4 in 24 Hours today. Amassing a wealth of resources while thrifting, I’ve managed to pick up two copies of this dated bestseller at a fraction of the SRP. Accordingly, we’re going through the lessons in tandem.
I am really excited about this. Although I’ve already put up a few sites, my lack of expertise hinders my efforts. I’m constantly referencing my resource library to find the right HTML tags, and am far too dependent on Dreamweaver for tasks and layout issues which call for more complex coding. This course of study will help me flush out the major gaps in my knowledge, correct the bad habits I’ve developed, and build a solid foundation for web publishing.
And nobody needs to tell me that I’m scoring BIG by having Mary involved. She reads far more blogs and web projects than I do, and her level of interest is well beyond that of the casual web surfer. Although she has not been working at web development in the same manner I have, the experience she brings as a trainer is worth her weight in gold, and her insight more than rubies! I’m confident that her “winning personality”, natural curiosity and voracious appetite for knowledge will serve us well on our path to geekdom.
Since the SAMS course is conveniently broken out into twenty-four one-hour lessons, I’m hoping to have this finished by the beginning of next week. We’ve already blown through the first few lessons without any problems. (I know, it’s not like this isn’t brain surgery here.) Although we both have other demands on our time, I see no reason why we can’t accomplish this worthy little goal. Beyond the delightful distraction this offers, I’m certain that both she and I will benefit greatly by developing these particular skills.
